Note.

This was the 11th concert of the KCO Troika Series. It had been a while since I last worked as the supervising director for the Korean Chamber Orchestra, and as always, KCO performances leave a good impression—there’s always a lasting resonance. I remember the audience response and the performers’ level of concentration being exceptionally strong.

The second piece

Giovanni Bottesini – Grand Duo Concertante for Violin, Double Bass and String Orchestra

The soloists for this piece were Dan Zhu (Vn) and Christoph Schmidt (CB). It left such a strong impression that it felt insufficient to capture it only in writing, so I later searched for it on YouTube to preserve the memory.

It was fascinating to see a double bass and violin performing together with a chamber orchestra. The structure of the piece was well-shaped, with a clear progression, and what stood out most was how the double bass grounded the sound during the violin’s solo passages.

KCO performances tend to have a dedicated audience base, which consistently results in strong audience reactions. Of course, this is supported by the ensemble’s performance quality and thoughtful programming.

At the end of the performance, during the curtain call, I found myself thinking about how much Mr. Kim Min seemed to genuinely enjoy performing.

Program.
